Whiting Brothers Gas Station near San Fidel, NM
This beautiful, pristine station was still open in 1983. Its proximity to I-40 near the McCarty’s exit, plus the giant signs posted across 66 that caught the eye of westbound travelers, kept it, and the accompanying motel, going for a while. Sadly, the building has succumbed over time to abandonment, vandalism and a fire, while a network of plastic pipes sought to vent off underground fumes from leaking tanks. While the motel is long gone, the station still stands, its once radiant Whiting Brothers plumage now collapsed onto the canopy . . . the signs across the road still beckon uselessly.
