Whiting Brothers Gas Station in San Jon, NM
Oh boy…here’s a photo that says it all about the fate of Whiting Brothers. San Jon, NM, suffered from having just one I-40 exit. No longer “EZ Off, EZ On”, most travelers merely sped on by towards Tucumcari, leaving most of the businesses along former Route 66 thru town high and dry. It appears that some hardy soul vainly tried to keep this one going as something other than a W Bros, as evidenced by the green paint applied to the lower portions of the station and the Shamrock decal on one pump. But it was kaput by 1983. A sign of desperate times (no money for real signs) is the red spray-painted “Girls” and arrow pointing to the Ladies room.
