Whiting Brothers Gas Station in Shamrock, TX
This was the LAST or FIRST Whiting Bros. one encountered on Route 66, depending on their direction of travel. The chain reportedly bought some property across the line in Oklahoma but never expanded there before the end came. Shamrock, TX, seemed to have a thing for station buildings decorated with little crenellations and pylons, as several in town were thusly appointed. This location was the inspiration for my very first Route 66 oil painting done in the mid-1980s. As the years passed (the building housing various businesses) the WB shield finally fell off the driveway sign, revealing the older slogan “GAS for LESS” underneath.
